The Union County Lions Volunteers will be in all county elementary schools to provide FREE vision testing for Pre-K students. Please be sure that your student is in school on the day the screening is performed.

Many vision problems, like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (crossed eyes), and refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism), can develop in early childhood and may not be easily noticeable by parents or caregivers. Vision screening is recommended for children at ages 3, 4, and 5

The Union County Lions Club Annual Reverse Raffle fundraiser time is here again. The 2024-25 year has been a busy one for your Lions Club. They presented the Poet Voices Concert, their annual low-cost Fresh pecan sale, the free spaghetti dinner, the Mark Martin and Ralph Shick UCHS Scholarships and the free Vision Clinic held at the high school on May 10.

The Union County Lions Club had seven Martin/Shick scholarships to award out of 26 Union County High School applicants. Competition was fierce, and these seven seniors are well-deserving.

Do you have a child, family member, or friend who has difficulty seeing but cannot afford to go to an eye doctor? No problem! The Smoky Mountain Lions Charities Vision Van is coming to Union County High School in Maynardville on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants from Union, Claiborne, and Grainger counties will receive a free eye exam and free glasses. All you need is an appointment. Vision Screening for children six and under will also be available by appointment.

That’s the only word that aptly describes the spaghetti dinner sponsored by the UCHS Culinary Class and the UC Lions Club! Under the direction of their instructor, Chef Zach Hodges, the students made HUGE pots of homemade spaghetti sauce that was rich, thick, and tasty. The aroma of the herbed Italian bread, again prepared by the student chefs, wafted several feet away from the serving table, steering people in that direction.

Con Hunley was born in Fountain City and attended Central High School. He idolized Chet Atkins and taught himself to play using Chet Atkins's signature guitar style, often called "Atkins style" or "Travis picking,". Rather than using a guitar pick, this method utilizes his thumb and the first two (or sometimes three) fingers of his right hand to play a combination of bass, rhythm, and melody simultaneously, creating a rich and complex sound.

Due to an unforeseen conflict, the Union County Lion’s Clubs Free Spaghetti Dinner (originally planned on September 7 before the Union County Opry’s Lonesome River Band concert) has had to be rescheduled. The FREE Spaghetti Dinner will now be held at 5:30 pm on Saturday December 14th before the Union County Opry’s fantastic annual Christmas Show!! The dinner is still free! And followed by excellent music. Hope to see you there!

The Union County Lions Club will be hosting a free homemade spaghetti dinner for all Union County citizens on Saturday, September 7, at 5:30 p.m. at Union County High School. Dinner will include salad, Italian bread, drinks and desserts, and will be held just before the Union County Opry presents the Lonesome River Band. This band has been touring for 42 years and is one of the most respected names in Bluegrass.

Mark Allen Martin of Maynardville. graduated from the University of Tennessee and taught music in the Union County school system for 27 years. He was known as a terrific teacher, highly skilled and talented musician, friendly, and loved to joke around. The Union County Lions Club honors his memory by awarding scholarships to UCHS High School seniors in his name.
