Prevent Falls and Stay Active with "A Matter of Balance"

Have concerns about falling? You're not alone. Many older adults limit their daily activities because they worry about falling, but it doesn't have to be that way. The University of Tennessee Extension in Union County is offering A Matter of Balance, an award-winning program designed to help older adults build confidence, improve balance, and reduce their risk of falls.

The free eight-week class will begin Wednesday, July 9, at the Union County Senior Center and will meet weekly at 9:00 a.m. Additional sessions will be held on July 16, 23, and 30, and August 6, 13, 20, and 27. Each class lasts approximately two hours.

The program will be led by Abigail Thomas, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent with UT Extension Union County, and Anna Marie Cooksey, Health Educator, who will guide participants through practical strategies for preventing falls and maintaining an active, independent lifestyle.

Participants will learn how to:

-View falls as controllable
-Set realistic goals to increase physical activity
-Reduce fall hazards in and around the home
-Improve balance, flexibility, and strength through simple exercises

This program is ideal for anyone who has concerns about falling, has experienced a fall in the past, wants to improve balance and mobility, or has limited activities due to fear of falling.

Whether you're looking to gain confidence, stay active, or simply learn more about fall prevention, A Matter of Balance offers valuable tools in a supportive group setting.

Space is limited, so register today by contacting Abigail Thomas, FCS Agent, at 865-992-8038 or athom237@utk.edu.
