Coke Bottle Muscles

When you’re a kid, you don’t understand some of the things that adults do. For instance, I thought Christmas presents were supposed to be something you wanted or could enjoy. Even for adults. Then one year my mom gave my dad a gift that I couldn’t imagine anybody wanting or enjoying.

Frosted carrot bars

Here is a different cookie recipe. It reminds me of a carrot cake. Make these bars when you want a special cookie to serve, Beat eggs until light. Gradually beat in sugar. Alternate salad oil and flour sifted with soda, salt and cinnamon. Mix well. Fold in carrots, coconut and nuts. Spread evenly in 2 greased 9 by 13 inch baking pans. Bake at 350 F. for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven and set on racks to cool. Spread with cream cheese frosting then cut into 1 inch by 3 inch bars. Store in refrigerator or freezer.

The Blue Skies of Autumn

Fall not only brings brilliant colored mountains,
but beautiful skies as well.

I look forward to the skies of September and October and their intense blue every year. Autumn skies typically have a lot of big puffy cumulus clouds as well, highlighting the blue even more. Scanning the sky from overhead to the horizon will show that the brilliant blue overhead fades to a lighter blue near the horizon. Let us delve into some sky science and see what’s going on.

Irwin Music Gathering is revisited every Tuesday night at the museum

The Harvest Music Gathering at Irwin School in Sharps Chapel, c. 1929.

Jack and Lorne sat soaking in the large tub on the front porch. They had spent the last three Saturdays walking behind Paw’s turn plow in the dirt and dust picking up sweet taters, placing them, first in their bucket, then in the wagon.
They were thrilled it was late October and the harvest season was at an end. They were also excited about this Saturday night. Tonight, instead of work, they would get the chance to have a bucketload of fun. It was the night of the Harvest Music Gathering at Irwin School.

Research: Back Pain Treatment for Teens ‘Ignores Big Picture Issues’: Part 2

New research has revealed that most treatments being offered to teenagers with persistent back pain are ‘outdated’. The study shows that new approaches to tackling back pain are not being tested among teenagers. Instead, most treatments being offered to teenagers with back pain tend to ignore the ‘big picture’ issues such as sleep, mood, stress, and relationships. “Traditional approaches such as exercise can play a useful role in helping teenagers with back pain,” explained researcher Sara D.

Raw Hide

Who doesn’t love a good celebration? I even attended one while being injured, but this time, it wasn’t from a fall.
My stepfather has two granddaughters who graduated from high school together in Ormond Beach, Florida. My step brother and sisters invited all of us to come down for the celebration.

Chocolate caramel bars

You can't go wrong with a German Chocolate Cake mix. Add some nuts and caramels to it and you have a winner again. Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix dry cake mix, softened butter and egg until crumbly. Reserve 1 1/2 cups of the mixture. Press remaining crumbly dough into an ungreased 9 by 13 inch baking pan. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until crust appears dry. Remove from oven and cool 10 minutes. Meanwhile, in small saucepan over low heat, combine the extra margarine, milk and caramels over low heat, stirring occasionally, until caramels are melted. Pour over crust. Sprinkle with nuts and reserved crumbly mixture.

Roadkill

The newcomer armadillo, along with many other animal species, are falling victim to roadkill in increasing numbers.

Animals killed by automobiles are a common in rural areas. Skunk, ‘possum, turtles, and more recently, armadillos, who have managed to work their way east to our area. I recently saw a squashed aardvark in front of the McDonalds in Tazewell. Skunks are so brazen due to their very effective odoriferous defense mechanism, that they meet their end thinking ...

Ice Cream Truck

I heard it recently while sitting on the back deck with my husband Tim. It brought back a childhood memory I hadn’t thought of in years.
When I was ten years old, both of my parents worked, so I spent my summers at my grandparents’ house. One day, I was playing in their carport when I began to hear tinkling music that was growing louder. It sounded like a children’s song.
