The theme of this year’s Union County Heritage Festival is “Celebrating Country.” One thing country that has all but disappeared is the country store. There was one or more in every community. The country store carried everything from food to feed. You could use the feed sacks to make a dress or buy the finest linen or silk for a special occasion. It was the place to shop, socialize, or maybe just sit on the porch and enjoy a Pepsi Cola or an R. C. and a Moon Pie. Some people bought peanuts and a Coke. Children and some adults ate Kitts candy or slurped a banana popsicle.

Celebrate Country at the 22nd Heritage Festival on October 3, 2026! Visitors can park at Union County High School and enjoy the main event in Wilson Park or board the Free Shuttle (the big yellow bus) sponsored by Monroe Bus Lines, State Farm Insurance, and City of Plainview to travel to the Farmers Market Pavilion for produce and farm products, the Union County Museum for the Heritage Day Quilt Show, and the Snodderly House for the Art Show. All venues are open from 10:00 to 4:00.

The Union County Heritage Festival Quilt Show is Saturday October 3, 2026, at the Union County Museum. All quilters are invited to bring their quilts to the Museum on Thursday, October 1 between 1:30 and 6:00 pm. Ellen Perry and Patricia Campbell will be at the Museum to accept entries. Quilts will be judged, ribbons placed on them, and displayed for viewing on Saturday, October 3, 2026, during Museum Festival hours of 10:00 until 4:00.

The Union County Heritage Festival Art Show will be held on Saturday, October 3, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Historic Snodderly House, 720 Main Street, Maynardville.

The annual Pie and Cake Contest at the UC Heritage Festival was a huge hit this year, drawing an impressive 27 delicious entries from local bakers eager to show off their culinary talents. The sweet aroma of pies and cakes filled the air as judges sampled everything from fruit-filled creations to rich chocolate delights.

In the Pie Contest, Kathy Venturella took home the title of Grand Champion Pie and a $100 prize with her show-stopping Lemon Meringue Pie.

Union County bakers have one last chance to enter the Cake and Pie Contests at the 2025 Union County Heritage Festival. Entries will be accepted at the Union County Extension Office on Thursday, October 2, from 4 to 5 p.m., and Friday, October 3, from 8 to 11 a.m. Judging will take place Friday at 12:30 p.m.

So on October 4, 2025, the Union County Heritage Festival is giving a nod to our agricultural heritage with the theme, “Plowing the fields”. Let's hop on Carl's tractor and tour Wilson Park. At the entrance, take a selfie with Smokey and drill into a log to guess its age. Inspect the Antique cars and pick up a copy of Historic Union County Newspaper.
