At the regular meeting in May, the Union County Board of Education expressed a clear message to HES Facilities Management company that custodians would remain Union County employees. Carolyn Murr, President of UC Education Association, reminded the board that the outsourcing of substitutes had caused lots of problems and outsourcing janitors could have the same issues. Two HES managers presented the benefits that the company offered.

Have you ever snorkeled or been scuba diving? I have, but not in water. I know that sounds strange, but then again, it’s me. So, my explanation will not be a simple one.

For me, it began when I looked over a newsletter from my church. In it, there was a bible reading plan in which you could read the whole, entire bible in a year’s time. It was listed a week at a time and each day had a long list of chapters to read. I often wondered how many people were participating. Then one day a thought popped into my head: “You’ve never read the bible straight though from cover to cover.” I’m talking from Genesis to Revelation.

The UC Family & Community Education (FCE) Club held its annual Spring Luncheon and Cultural Arts Contest in May at the Extension office. With the theme “Hats Off to FCE,” the meeting space was transformed into an elegant tea party setting, complete with beautiful spring decorations. Members arrived in their Sunday best—lovely dresses and charming hats adding a touch of tradition and fun to the occasion.

My attention was once drawn to the words “busy body” and “busybody”. At first sight, most might think, “So? What’s the difference?”

The next regular workshop and meeting of the Union County Board of Education will be on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at Union County High School. The workshop will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the meeting immediately to follow.

At Horace Maynard Middle School, education takes center stage with a new offering for motivated 8th-grade students: Introduction to Teaching as a Profession. This fast-paced, high school credit course is designed to spark interest in the world of education by giving students an early look into what it means to be a teacher and a leader in the classroom.

From personal observation and talking with others, it seems to be a good year for carpenter bees, as there are plenty of them. Usually when I get asked about them it’s how to get rid of them.

‘Frozen shoulder’ is a term sometimes used loosely in connection with any type of persistent shoulder pain. But specifically it is the loss of arm movement at the shoulder joint. The shoulder is the part of the body that is the third most common subject for chiropractic treatment, the lower back and the neck being the two most common.

Junior Rangers learn a wide variety of topics, like flora and fauna, history, wilderness preparedness and others, while having fun in the great outdoors!

Junior Ranger Camp at Norris Dam is designed for kids ages 9-12. The day camp takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with an evening program on Thursday. Drop off and pick up locations change daily, so make sure to pay attention to the registration packet!
