TDOT installs 4 way stop in Plainview

TDOT installs stop signs on Tazewell Pike in Plainview

On June 22, 2026, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) installed stop signs at the intersection of Tazewell Pike (SR 131), Ailor Gap (SR 144), and Corryton Road, Additional warning signals have been located on the Knoxville side of Tazewell Pike to warn traffic headed toward Luttrell of the new stop signs. Plainview Mayor Lynn Beeler has requested additional safety warnings of rumple strips, arrows, and stop signs painted on the roadways.

TDOT noticed the high number of crashes over the last three years and became concerned particularly over crashes with injuries and fatalities. TDOT decided that a four way stop was the most appropriate solution. TDOT advised that there were not enough vehicles per hour to warrant a traffic light.

According to Mayor Beeler, the four way stop seems to be working. He has asked the Plainview Police Department to monitor the intersection and warn drivers who do not come to a complete stop. He said the police will continue this practice until people get used to the new traffic pattern.

TDOT has told Plainview that TDOT will also monitor the intersection, especially with regard to the turn lane on Tazewell Pike. TDOT has said that if motorists cannot manage the turn lane, the lane will be removed.

TDOT and Plainview request that motorists use caution and give the new safety measures some time for people to become acquainted with the new pattern. According to TDOT, four way stops have prevented crashes in other similar intersections especially since the speed limit is 40 mph on Tazewell Pike.
