Rescue Squad to get added funding
Representatives from the Union County Rescue Squad addressed the regular meeting of the Union County Commission on Monday, June 22, 2026, and asked for the same amount of contribution that the fire departments were receiving in the budget for 2026-2027 (FY 27). Dennis Nicely spoke while Brad Harrell distributed a report on the Squad's finances and needs. According to Nicely, the squad has not been able to have the bass tournament fundraiser and tools and equipment need to be upgraded or replaced. Mayor Bailey explained that the FY 27 Budget had already been sent to the Tennessee Comptroller for approval; however, a budget amendment could be approved in August. Commissioner Larry Lay made the motion and Commissioner Eddie Simpson provided a second. The vote was was unanimous that the UCRS should receive $35,000 also.
At the May meeting, the Commission had voted for Mayor Bailey to appoint a new Union County Farmers Market Board. At the June meeting, the Mayor recommended for approval Commissioners Ashley Mike, Cheryl Walker, Kenny Moore, and Danny Cooke and Citizens Jordan Campbell and Tim Cox to serve on the new board. One position remains vacant but will be filled as soon as possible. Commissioners voted to approve the members. The new Union County Farmers Market Board will meet on Monday, July 6, at 6:00 in the large courtroom.
All other county meetings are postponed until August. However, Commissioner Sidney Jessee, Jr. commented that the Jail Committee would have a called meeting in July if the Chancery Court made a decision on the proposed jail property. On June 29, the School Board (6:00), the Financial Management Committee (6:30), and the County Commission (7:00) will meet in a called meeting to finalize and close out the FY 26 Budget.
All Budget Amendments and Transfers passed, and revenues and spending for the current budget are at expected amounts. One contract to continue the e-rate contract renewal for the school system for three years was approved
Director Greg Clay reported that the new HMMS had a water issue in a back parking lot that is being corrected. Classrooms for sixth and seventh grades are complete. The eighth grade has a few things to complete. The boulevard is coming along but the schedule is “tight”. Plans are still to open the school this August.
The next regular commission meeting should be August 24, 2026, at 7:00.
