A God Thing
Is there something that you watch for on a regular basis? For instance, every time we’re on the road, my husband Tim looks for certain cars. “Did you see that Camaro?” I usually respond: “There was a Camaro?” As for me, my cousin and good friend Lynda has gotten me in the habit of looking for what we call “A God Thing.”
To us, “A God Thing” is a situation where we can clearly see the Hand of The Lord working. That being said, it’s not a miracle per se. A good example of this happened a few years ago when I was attending a friend’s church. During the service, a lady got up and asked for the little children to come down front and sing with her. I so enjoy watching little children sing praises to the Lord. In fact, Jesus does as well (Mathew 19:14.) They stood to one side of the altar, which was a pew. Behind it was a couple of steps that lead to the podium where the preacher gave his sermons.
After they began to sing, I noticed this one little girl who couldn’t be still. She was constantly moving around and trying to get the attention of the other children. My mind went back to my childhood in church. They too would call for children to come up front and sing. Let me tell you, before my mom would let me join them, she quickly laid down the law of how I was to behave. Now, I most certainly did as she said because I knew I would get in trouble after we got back home. Are thinking about me possibly getting a spanking? Well, I had gotten to a point where those didn’t really bother me like they once had. My resourceful mother would discipline me by having me stand with my nose in the corner. I’m talking I could taste the wood paneling. To me that was worse than any spanking.
As I watched, this little girl began to climb up and down the couple of steps. At one point, she was on the top one when she scooted over sideways to be directly behind the pew. The next thing I knew she had tumbled over the top of it. She was literally air borne and heading toward the ground head first. I had a moment of panic in that I envisioned her slamming into the floor and breaking a bone. Thankfully that never happened. The lady standing with the children reached over and snatched her mid-air. Now, I know what you’re probably thinking that she had been watching the little girl out of the corner of her eye. I totally agree, but how she did it was such a God Thing.
For one, the lady remained calm. There were no exclamations of fear or surprise. She didn’t even stop singing. For another, her movement was fluid and even graceful as she reached out and grabbed the girl mid-flight. Also, the lady was super quick. It reminded me of videos of frogs or lizards when they flick out their tongues at an incredible speed to catch a fly. As for the other kids, they too kept on singing as if nothing had happened. Best of all, nobody was hurt.
“That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.” Isaiah 41:20 (KJV)
Honestly, I don’t believe there’s a situation in which The LORD can’t use His power in order to help or even transform it into something positive. Also, He does it more often than we give Him credit for doing. So, keep your eyes open and be amazed.
I couldn’t help but wonder what would’ve happened if I had been the lady singing with the children. First, I would’ve given a loud gasp and thrown the hymnal, which could’ve hit one of the children. Then I would’ve lunged at the girl. After I caught her, we would’ve fallen into the pew and rolled onto the floor. If my mom was there, she would be thinking: “Brooke gets some corner time!”
