Christmas Wreath Workshop Success

(L to R) Abigail Thomas, Aurora Roberts, Ann Shelor, Michele Cooper, Autumn Walsh, Sherry Owens, Shannon DeWitt, and Shawn Hendrickson

The Union County Extension Office recently hosted a successful and festive Christmas Wreath Making Workshop at Chuck Swan State Forest, bringing community members together to celebrate the season while learning new skills.

Participants each created a one-of-a-kind wreath using locally sourced greenery gathered from the surrounding area. Natural materials such as cedar, pine, and other evergreens were used as the base, while additional decorations included dried okra pods, dried orange slices, holly, dried hydrangeas, and other natural elements, giving each wreath a unique and rustic holiday charm.

The class was taught by Shannon DeWitt, UT Extension Agriculture Agent, and Abigail Thomas, UT Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Agent. DeWitt led participants in building their wreaths, while also teaching how to identify local trees, safely and responsibly gather greenery, and explore ways wreath making could become a small seasonal business. Thomas assisted participants throughout the workshop, providing support and decorating guidance as wreaths were completed.

The Union County Extension Office would like to extend a special thank you to the Tennessee Department of Forestry at Chuck Swan State Forest for their partnership, use of the facility, and assistance during the workshop. Staff members from the Tennessee Department of Forestry played an important role in helping the class run smoothly and in supporting hands-on learning.

This workshop highlighted the value of local resources, creativity, and community partnerships, while providing participants with a handmade decoration to enjoy throughout the holiday season.
