Reverend Roy Acuff

Rev. Roy Glen Acuff – 86 of Blaine, was born, January 27, 1932 to Joe P. and Lora Sellers Acuff and passed away, Thursday, March 1, 2018. He was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army PFC from 1952-1954. Roy began preaching in 1961 and has been a faithful servant of the Lord for fifty-seven years.

James Grubb "Jimmy" Shumate

James Grubb “Jimmy” Shumate-age 79 of Maynardville passed away Monday, February 19, 2018 at his home. He was born February 6, 1939 in Union County. Preceded in death by parents, James A. and Oma Grubb Shumate; infant brother, George Shumate.
James was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University and the University of Tennessee with degrees in Physics, Environment and Mathematics and also held a teaching certificate. He was a retired school teacher with Union County Schools.

He is survived by several cousins.

Kenneth E. Tharp

Kenneth E. Tharp-age 70 of Powder Springs, born March 23, 1947 passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at his home. He was of the Baptist faith. Preceded in death by parents, Rosco Tharp and Reba Merritt; brothers, Ralph Tharp, J. L. and Swan Tharp, Sammy Merritt; sisters, Zola Perry and Susie Kitts.

Survived by nephew, Ivan Capps and wife, Marilyn along with a host of other family and friends.

Mary Ann Sanders

Mary Ann Sanders, 78, of Knoxville, took Jesus’ hand Tuesday evening, February 27, 2018, and passed peacefully from this life after a brief illness. She was born a coal miners daughter in Honaker, VA, March 23, 1939. She was a devoted wife, telling her husband of 62 years, George Clark Sanders, she would love him always, on her last day. My dad said she was the prettiest girl he ever met. They married with little, starting a family on the GI Bill and figuring out things as they went.

Paul George Kenyon

Paul George Kenyon, Sr., age 76, of Knoxville, Tennessee, formerly of Toledo, Ohio, passed away February 27, 2018 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was a veteran who served in the United States Navy. Preceded in death by parents George and Mabel Kenyon. Survived by sons Danny and P.J. Kenyon, daughter Kimmi Kenyon, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Announcement will be made by Mynatt Funeral Home in Fountain City. June Bailey Hill

June Bailey Hill-age 86 of Knoxville passed away suddenly Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Fort Sander’s Regional Medical Center. June was a member of New Start Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband, Hollis Hill; son, Brian Hill; parents, James and Pearl (Nicley) Bailey; sister, Elsie Thomas; brothers, Elmer and Austin Bailey.

Survivors: Daughter, Tammy Hill; sisters, Barbara Ingle and Jama Webb, all of Knoxville; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Mary Louise Pack

Mary Louise Pack was born in Knoxville, TN on July 30th, 1926 and GOD called her home Sunday February 25th, 2018. Louise was a dedicated wife mother and a faithful member of former Euclid Avenue Baptist Church now known as the Shepherd of the Hills Baptist Church. A woman of many talents, she loved all her children and grandchildren and was a willing servant of GOD. Louise loved her Lord and Savior and was a student of the Bible. All who knew her were blessed by her giving and loving spirit.

Lon Tipton Standifer

Lon Tipton Standifer-age 84 of Washburn passed away 4:30 P.M. Sunday, February 25, 2018 at his home. He was a member of Central View American Christian Church. Preceded in death by parents, Ralph and Susan Standifer; first wife, Ethel Standifer; brother, Joe Standifer; sisters, Jean McNeil, Lucille Booker; son-in-law, Gary Davis and three brothers-in-law.

Bonnie Smith Needham-age 76 of Washburn passed away Saturday morning, February 24, 2018 at her home. She was a member of Needham’s Chapel Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband of 60 years, Rev. Billy Needham; parents, Fate and Lenior Smith; brother, Paul Smith.

Margie Graves Helton

Margie L. Helton-age 83 of Washburn went to be with the Lord Friday morning, February 23, 2018. She was a member of Dutch Valley Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Rev. James Earl Helton; daughter, Betty (Helton) Beeler, brothers, Billy, Hue Gene, Jerry and Robert Graves.

Claude H.Mynatt

Claude Hamilton Mynatt-age 92 of Maynardville passed away Friday morning, February 23, 2018 at North Knoxville Medical Center. He was preceded in death by wife, Genevieve Cooke Mynatt; parents, Horace and Gertrude Robinson Mynatt; brothers, Vernon and Herbert Mynatt; sister, Elizabeth Mynatt.

Samuel McPherson Jelf

Sam Jelf, age 74, son of the late Rev. William and Katherine Jelf, was born in Madisonville, TN and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Sam attended Hiwassee College and served in the USAF in Germany and England. Sam and his wife, Sandra Braden Jelf, were married 52 wonderful years and are proud parents of Gregory (Joanna) and Tonya and three grandchildren, Sophia, Ian, and Joanna. He is also survived by Bill Jelf, Trudy Jelf, Oleva Braden, Mike Braden, Johnny Braden, and Barbara (Steve) Chandler and several nieces and nephews. Sam’s vocation was banking.

Fred Carl King

Fred Carl King, age 90, passed away February 21, 2018 at Westmoreland Nursing Home and Rehab Center. Preceded in death by father Taylor King, mother Lona Brown King, son Stephen King, brother Eugene King, and sister Evelyn Whaley. Survivors include sister Pauline McManus, daughter Connie Jackson, sons Fredrick King (Chrissy), David King (Penny), grandchildren Kirsten King, Tyler King, Amber Welch, Todd King, and Gregory Jackson (Renee), several great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Estelle Loy

Estelle Ella Edmondson Loy of Maynardville, Tennessee, passed away Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the age of 104.

A native of Union County, Estelle was born in the Nave Hill community on January 8, 1914. She was a retired school teacher and received her teaching certification from Lincoln Memorial University. Estelle educated generations of families in the county, having taught first through eighth grades in a one-room schoolhouse in the Nave Hill and Hubbs Grove schools. She ended her 30 year-career at Maynardville Elementary School.

James (Frank) Edwards

James (Frank) Edwards, age 80, went to be with the Lord Thursday, February 22nd after a long illness. He enjoyed time with his family, especially his grandchildren and playing his guitar. He was a member and deacon of Bryams Fork Baptist Church.

Irene (Walker) Nelson

Irene (Walker) Nelson - age 83 of Halls passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, mamaw, aunt, and friend. She is now rejoicing in heaven alongside of her husband Arvel Marion Nelson, daughter Martha Nelson, grandson Jason Nelson, parents Andy and Cora Walker, brothers Glen Walker, Houlk Walker, Perry Walker, sisters Virgie Gabriel, Cecila Brantley, and Ethel Dennis. Her legacy lives on through her loving and devoted family: daughter Judy (David) Walton, sons Tommy (Marlene) Nelson and Jeff Nelson.

Scott Sparks

Scott Sparks, age 51, of Knoxville, TN, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 19th, 2018. Scott earned his bachelors degree from the University of North Carolina, his masters degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and was a teacher at Karns High School. He was a former College Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, former Pastor at White Stone Church, and founding Pastor of The Grove Church. Scott's passion was leading people to Christ and walking along side them in their faith journey.
