Kindergarteners learn the 'Power of Positivity'

In April, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Abigail Thomas and Union County 4-H Teen Leader Jaelyn Cummings partnered to bring the Healthy Me pilot program to Whitney Copeland’s kindergarten class at Big Ridge Elementary School. Over the course of six visits, students participated in engaging lessons designed to promote emotional wellness, social skills and mindfulness.

UC 4-H hosts 2025 baking contest

The Union County 4-H held its annual County Baking Contest, showcasing the incredible culinary talents of local youth. The competition, held on at the Union County Extension Open House, featured a variety of delicious baked goods, with each grade level assigned a specific category. Participants demonstrated creativity, skill and passion for baking, making it a delightful and delicious event for all involved.

UC 4-H Photography Contest winners announced

The Union County 4-H program recently hosted its annual Photography Contest, providing a platform for young photographers across the county to exhibit their talents. Participants captured compelling images across various categories, demonstrating both technical skill and artistic creativity. After thorough evaluation, the judges have announced the winners.

The photography contest was displayed at the Extension Office Open House on March 27, where attendees had the opportunity to view the impressive entries and support the young photographers.

Union County Extension Office Hosts Successful Open House Event

Union County, TN – On March 27th, the Union County Extension Office welcomed community members to its Open House event, showcasing the many programs and resources available to local residents. The event provided an opportunity for guests to learn more about Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H Youth Development, Agriculture and Natural Resources, and other valuable extension services.

Allyson Hanna Wins 4-H State Round-Up

Allyson Hanna has done her hometown proud by bringing home a state-level win from the Tennessee 4-H Round-Up and All-Star Conference. The 16-year-old homeschooler is a junior this year, and she won her division with a Senior Level 1 consumer education project on the Consumer Bill of Rights.

Hanna has been active in 4-H since she was in the fifth grade, and she credits the program with helping her grow as a leader and a team player.

Hog Club Gives Kids Valuable Skills

The Union County 4-H Hog Club headed to the state competition last weekend, a truckload of middle schoolers, high schoolers, and the hogs they spent the fall and winter raising. The Hog Club has been going strong since 2014, teaching students valuable skills from animal care to public speaking.

Folks like to complain about “kids these days” with their heads in their phones all the time, but would you believe that the impetus for starting the Hog Club was a teenager? Union County’s UT Extension Agent Shannon DeWitt said it started as a little bit of a love story.
