The Union County Heritage Festival will once again celebrate the community’s baking traditions with its Pie and Cake Contest. Bakers of all ages are invited to showcase their favorite homemade recipes and compete for cash prizes, with no entry fee required.

The Pie Contest will feature three categories: fruit, cream and nut/other. The Cake Contest will include layered cake, sheet cake and Bundt cake categories.

The 2026 Eastern Region 4-H FCS Skill-A-Thon Contest was held August 28, in McMinn County, Tennessee. Union County 4-H was well represented this year, with two members competing and showcasing their knowledge and skills in Family and Consumer Sciences.

In the Junior Division, Coral Davis earned an impressive 2nd place finish as an individual. In the Junior High Division, Aspen Davis also represented Union County well, earning 4th place as an individual.

Shoppers can find a variety of gently used items, including clothing, shoes, accessories, household items, toys, tools, and more. Clothing, shoes, and accessories will be available inside the Extension Office meeting room, while household items and other larger items will be set up outside, weather permitting. The sale will be held rain or shine.

Fresh green bean season is here, making it the perfect time to learn how to safely preserve your harvest for months to come. The University of Tennessee Extension in Union County is offering a hands-on Green Bean Food Preservation Class on Saturday, July 11, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Union County Farmers Market, located at 115 Durham Drive in Maynardville.

The Union County Family and Community Education (FCE) club gathered in June for an informative and enjoyable meeting at the Extension Office. Members welcomed guest speakers from FirstBank of Maynardville, who presented a program on financial fraud and scams. Attendees learned about common fraud tactics, warning signs to watch for, and ways to protect personal and financial information.

Maynardville, Tenn. – Fresh Wagon is celebrating their five year anniversary of providing locally sourced food to families of Union County and the surrounding areas by hosting an event at 12:00pm on June 16th at First Bank Maynardville.

Fresh Wagon is a mobile food distribution program that works to provide community members with local meat, dairy, eggs, honey, jellies, and produce with an emphasis on local farm partnerships. These partnerships have led to over $20,000 being given back to the local food economy.

The Fresh Wagon food distribution program is celebrating five years of serving Union County and surrounding areas. Since its beginning, Fresh Wagon has worked to increase access to fresh and nutritious food while bringing the community together through service and support.

The next Fresh Wagon distribution will be held on Tuesday, June 16 at 1 p.m. at FirstBank, at 2905 Maynardville Hwy, Maynardville, TN 37807. Food will be distributed on a first come, first served basis while supplies last.
