UCPS recognizes Rep. Powers
On January 5, Rebecca Lock, Union County Board of Education member, presented Representative Dennis Powers with a Making a Difference Award for his dedication and service to Union County Public Schools. In 2011, Representative Powers was very instrumental in obtaining the Tennessee Virtual Academy as part of former Director Wayne Goforth’s initiative to find additional revenue for UCPS as well as address the need for some students to access an online education. She thanked him for steering the passage of a law to enable students in TNVA to have the opportunity to play a sport in their home county if they meet the eligibility requirements. Lock also noted the years of work Powers spent to spearhead the process of establishing the TCAT and Walter's State on the UCHS campus.
UCPS celebrated the event with a luncheon from Butterblume Bakehouse with table decorations by Dr. Lauren Effler and members of the central office staff. Effler and Schools Director Greg Clay also called attention to several honors that the school system has achieved. County Mayor Jason Bailey briefly outlined several future programs including a Boys and Girls Club, a YMCA and ConnectEd fiber that will benefit Union County students. Tennessee Representative Dave Wright from Corryton and representatives from elected officials US Senator Marsha Blackburn, TN Senator Becky Massey, TN Representative Elaine Davis and TN Senator Jessie Seal were present to celebrate the occasion and lend their support.
In addition, Kelli Chaney, President of TCAT Knoxville, praised Powers for his leadership and persistence to bring higher education to Union County.
Chaney led a tour of the TCAT classrooms and facilities. Classrooms are designed for multiple courses to be taught. The welding program instructors will be Grace Gish and Josh Plum. Calvin Smith is the campus coordinator. Classes are already in progress for dual enrollment through UCHS. Adult and workforce development will begin in February.
