International Overdose Awareness Day: Honoring Lives, Inspiring Hope

Each year, communities around the world come together on August 31 to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day—the world's largest campaign dedicated to ending overdose, reducing the stigma surrounding substance use, and remembering the lives lost to overdose.

Overdose can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstance. Every life lost leaves behind grieving families, friends, coworkers, and neighbors. International Overdose Awareness Day provides an opportunity to honor those we have lost while also promoting education, prevention, recovery, and hope for those who continue their journey.

This year's theme reminds us that every conversation, every act of kindness, and every prevention effort have the power to make a difference. Whether through learning the signs of an overdose, safely storing and disposing of medications, carrying naloxone, or simply reaching out to someone who may be struggling, each of us can play a role in saving lives.

Here in Union County, ICARE invites the community to join us for our annual International Overdose Awareness Day event on Saturday, August 29, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wilson Park in Maynardville.

This free, family-friendly event is designed to bring our community together in remembrance, education, and hope. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit community resource booths, receive educational materials, learn about overdose prevention and recovery resources, and participate in activities that honor those impacted by substance use.

One of the evening's most meaningful features will be the Tree of Hope, where participants may write the names or messages of loved ones on remembrance ribbons to create a lasting tribute. The event will also include a special remembrance ceremony recognizing those whose lives have been lost while celebrating the strength of families, individuals in recovery, and the community members working every day to prevent future tragedies.

This year, ICARE is also offering Faces of Hope, a special photography initiative that celebrates recovery, resilience, and remembrance. At the event, Goin' Somewhere Photography and Gifts will be providing individuals in recovery to participate in a professional photo session. Each participant will have the opportunity to share a brief message of hope, remembrance, or encouragement. Selected photos and stories will be displayed during the International Overdose Awareness Day event, creating a powerful visual reminder that behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community committed to hope and healing.

In addition to honoring lives, the event serves as a reminder that recovery is possible and that no one must face substance use challenges alone. Local organizations will be available to provide information about prevention programs, treatment services, recovery support, mental health resources, and ways community members can become involved in making Union County healthier and safer.

Substance use affects more than individuals—it affects families, workplaces, schools, and entire communities. By increasing awareness, reducing stigma, and encouraging compassionate conversations, we can create an environment where people feel safe asking for help before a crisis occurs.
