Public speaking is a cornerstone of 4-H programs across the state of Tennessee. Through purposeful lesson planning and execution, as well as worthwhile opportunities to practice, 4-H prepares youth with the confidence and courage to build communication skills, and put those skills to good use. By learning how to distinctly think critically, openly express their ideas, and speak with confidence, youth are not only growing as leaders today—they are preparing for bright and successful futures tomorrow.
When participating in 4-H public speaking, youth are presented with the opportunity to compete at many levels—within their classrooms, at the county level, and potentially at the sub-regional level. At the sub-regional level, only one winner per grade, 4th – 8th, is given the opportunity to advance and represent their county at the sub-regional competition.
The Big 9 Sub-Regional Public Speaking Contest was held on Monday, February 23, 2026. At this event, Union County was proudly represented by three outstanding 4-H members. Union County had one competitor in each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade divisions. Coral Davis (4th Grade), Faith Tindell (5th Grade), and Aspen Davis (6th Grade). Each of these three competitors brought home first place in their respective divisions. Their hard work, preparation, and confidence truly paid off, and they represented Union County with excellence and pride.
