UCRTA shares lunch with UC Seniors

The Union County Retired Teachers Association shared pepperoni and veggie pizzas from Pizza Plus in Luttrell with the Union County Senior Center last month. Members also enjoyed treats of cookies and candy canes.

The Union County High School chorus performed O Holy Night and Carol of the Birds and led the seniors in a sing along of a variety of Christmas songs including both religious and traditional carols. Jingle Bells, Silent Night and Joy to the World brought about more robust participation. Retired teacher Dawn Patelke played a piano accompaniment. Chorus director Hannah Haynes brought music books to help the seniors sing along although most seem to not need the books.

Everyone gave a grand round of applause for the program. Haynes received donations to the UCHS Music Department from UCRTA and UCBPA.

Wendy Woods, Senior Center Director, decorated the center in Christmas red and green complete with an electronic roaring fire to warm the banquet style tables. On December 12, Wendy and Union County Government paid tribute to the former director, Melanie Dykes, who died earlier in 2025 while serving as director by naming the center the Melanie Dykes Senior Center of Union County. Melanie upgraded the food program for seniors and delivered food to seniors unable to travel to the center. She acquired several grants that provided equipment, a van, and technology for the center. Melanie brought speakers who enriched and supported a safe and healthy quality of life for each senior. Melanie began a travel program that took seniors to many Tennessee and out-of-state venues including parks, live theater and tourist attractions.

The seniors join the sing along.
