Susan Coffey wins TVA STEM Grant

Horace Maynard Middle School is proud to celebrate Ms. Coffey for once again going above and beyond for her students by successfully applying for and winning another grant to support her STEM classes. Her dedication to providing meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities continues to make a lasting impact on the student at HMMS.

Ms. Coffey was recently awarded a $2,500 Battelle Education STEM Classroom Award, sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Battelle Ventures, Inc. (BVI), for her project titled “6th–8th Grade STEM Classes Exploring STEM Used in Everyday Life.” This project will help students better understand how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics connect to the world around them through engaging, real-world applications.

According to the TVA press release, this year’s competition was especially strong, with more than 500 applications submitted and over $2.2 million in funding requested. Being selected from such a large and competitive pool highlights the quality of Ms. Coffey’s proposal and her commitment to expanding STEM education opportunities for her students.

Principal Tobi Kilgore stated, “We are extremely thankful for all the hard work Ms. Coffey puts into teaching her classes and for the extra effort she makes to seek out grant opportunities that directly benefit her students. Her dedication continues to strengthen STEM learning at Horace Maynard Middle School.”
