BOE approves resolution to investigate teacher workload
At the meeting on August 14, 2025, the Union County Board of Education approved a resolution to support the state's attempt to investigate teacher workload and to allow districts to decide how often to evaluate highly performing teachers. By the Board taking action on the resolution, it may become a part of the TSBA Legislative Program and be supported by districts statewide. Legislation with wide local support usually has a better chance of getting the Tennessee General Assembly approval.
The Board approved routine beginning of the school year budget amendments and transfers as well as contracts. Several TSBA recommended changes to the Board policies were also accepted on second reading. Criteria for appointing a non-voting student as a member to the Board was also reviewed.
Concerns for future discussion and possible action included differentiated pay or bonuses for teachers, supplements for cheerleader and band directors especially at UCHS, and using a TSBA survey to evaluate the director, Director Greg Clay updated the Board regarding this year's major maintenance projects. He also noted that the new middle school is on track to have a major wing under roof by early September. He stated that currently block was being laid on the cafeteria and as soon as the steel for the gym was erected, block would be laid there. Technology supervisor Jonathan Smith is preparing the costs of the electronics and technology. The technology costs were purposely excluded from the bid so the system could control the equipment costs and use the same vendor to keep the technology standard and compatible with the system's current electronics. Director Clay reported that enrollment at UCHS slightly decreased. Maynardville Elementary continues to increase in numbers, and all of the other schools are similar to last year's enrollment. At the beginning of this school year, the system has 2,690 students. Funding is based on last year's average of 2,667 students in K-12 since PreK has a separate funding formula from the state.
The Board will hold a workshop at 6:00 on Monday, September 29 to discuss incentive pay. The next regular meeting will be on Thursday, September 18 with the workshop at 6:00 and the meeting to follow. .
