Honor Guard members Arnold Smallin (Army) and Norman Gillen (Navy)

Adjutant Norman Gillen (U.S. Navy) opened the meeting by welcoming all the Veterans attending. As a member of the Tri-County Honor Guard, Norman reminded folks that all Veterans, by law, are entitled to burial rights, a marker, and a place in any Veterans' cemetery. The goal of the Honor Guard is not only to honor the Veteran who passed but to also honor and comfort the family. Veterans are buried with full military honors, three rifle volleys, and the playing of Taps. The flag that had been draped across the coffin is then folded and presented to the next of kin.

Members of the Tri-County Honor Guard attend every funeral, sometimes more than one in a day. They need Veterans volunteers to help honor some of the people who have passed away. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Norman at Adjutant@ALTNpost212.org

VSO Mark Cook was in attendance and wanted to be sure that all members understood that he works for the county and not work for the VA. Mark is here to help with any issue that any Veteran might have with the VA. He feels that many of our Vets are losing out in the benefits that they earned and deserve. Some may be timid about coming forward, think that the government will not help them, are not aware of the benefits, or think that they do not deserve benefits. Mark urged folks just to come in and talk with him. He can evaluate if there are unused benefits for the Veteran. Mark may be reached at 865-661-7243 or Mark.Cook@UnionCountyTN.gov

The American Legion Post 212 sponsored 3 boys and 1 girl to the American Legion Boys or Girls State camps this year. Students participate from all over TN. The purpose of the camp is to teach government from the township to the state level. The practical and objective training includes students participating in nonpartisan legislative, law enforcement, and court proceedings at the city, county, and state levels.

One of the 2026 camp students, Max Corum, wrote a letter to the American Legion to let them know how grateful he was for their sponsorship and the experience. His letter said, in part:
“Before arriving at Boys State, I expected to learn about government and take part in mock elections. What I did not expect was how much the experience would challenge me and inspire me. Throughout the week, I had the privilege of hearing from elected officials, military leaders, judges, and other distinguished speakers from across Tennessee. Their experiences and advice provided valuable insight into public service, leadership, and civic responsibility.” ….

“Most importantly, Boys State deepened my understanding of our system of government and the responsibilities that come with being an engaged citizen. I left the program with a renewed appreciation for those who serve our communities, state, and nation, as well as a stronger commitment to becoming involved in my own community.”
Max’s grandfather, Don Brantley, is an Army, 1st Calvary, Veteran.

All rising seniors in Union County are encouraged to apply to the American Legion Post 212 in April 2027 for sponsorship for the 2027 Girls or Boys State camps.

Norman reminded all Veterans who are using VA hearing aids that free batteries are available at the monthly Breakfast Welcome Desk.

Mark George, co-owner of the Trinity Funeral Home and George Brothers Construction with his brother Stacy, was the guest speaker for this breakfast. He told the Veterans that the Trinity Funeral Home was grateful to be able to sponsor the Veterans meal again to thank them for all that the Veterans have done for him, his family and the country. While all the Funeral Directors at Trinity Funeral Home are licensed, Mark and Stacy George had absolutely no mortuary experience or any idea that this was their future. Mark felt a very strong calling to build the funeral home here. George Brothers Construction designed and built the building in 2012. Mark stressed that he has grown spiritually to believe that we need to treat people the way that we want to be treated and he tries to carry that belief throughout his life.

Trinity Funeral Home is beautifully designed both inside and out. The lobby area is peaceful and welcoming, the staff is friendly and kind. Thank you, Mark and Stacy George, for providing breakfast for our Veterans and their families.

Don’t miss the next breakfast on Saturday, July 11, at the American Legion Hall on Veterans Rd. Doors open at 8 am, chow line opens at 8:30. The July breakfast is sponsored by Corum Bookkeeping Services.

Welcome Desk at each breakfast has free batteries for VA hearing aids.
