My husband found a job on the other side of the county. The long drive was too expensive and time consuming to continue. We found a piece of land near where he worked. With money in short supply, we built our new home on the buy-and-build-as-you-go plan. We first lived in a borrowed house trailer, then in the bare studded house, as we worked on various projects. With no credit history, we didn't even try to secure a mortgage.

When we bought our house in Athens, it came with an old crab apple tree in the far corner of the backyard. Shortly after we moved in, the tree came into full and fragrant bloom. It did that for many years thereafter. The pink blossoms were a delight when I looked out the kitchen window.

In 1961, a band called The Jarmels recorded a song called “A Little Bit of Soap.” The lyrics of the song report, accurately, that soap is useful stuff for removing things like lipstick, powder and perfume from one’s skin.

Will wash away your lipstick on my face

Mmm, a little bit of soap
Will wash away your powder from my chin

Mmm, a little bit of soap
Will take away your perfume eventually”

Everybody knows about banana pudding. It is a favorite go to when you want to make a good impression. Have you ever thought about using strawberries instead? You don't need fresh strawberries. Frozen ones are in this recipe. Keep some vanilla wafers on hand. Everything else you probably have in your pantry.

The coronavirus, or COVID -19, has impacted the lives of all Americans.
Many are out of work or working from home. Children are being taught by their parents, online by their teachers, and sometimes a combination of both. Many businesses have been ordered to temporarily suspend some or all of the services they offer. Sporting events have been cancelled. Proms, graduations, and many special events have been rescheduled.

Mayor Jason Bailey outlined a formula to fund the Chamber of Commerce at the March meeting of the Union County Budget and Finance Committee. Bailey related that he and chamber president Thomas Skibinski had formulated a workable plan using the hotel/motel tax.

In opening announcements, Dr. Jimmy Carter addressed the current novel coronavirus concern and stated that if school is canceled for an extended period due to the novel coronavirus/Covid-19, students will be issued Chromebooks loaded with two weeks of assignments that teachers are already developing.
Chromebooks and any other educational materials would be issued before spring break.
He further explained that he and the staff are in discussions with the TN Department of Education to determine appropriate lessons for special education and how to meet IEP and other requirements.

On March 19, Dana Simerly, director of Union County’s Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), offered details regarding how they are prepared to address pandemics such as we are currently facing with COVID-19.
