Cyndy Szekeres Prozzo, Beloved Author and Illustrator, Dies at 91

Cyndy Szekeres Prozzo, a renowned children’s book author and illustrator whose enchanting animal characters delighted generations, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2024, at the age of 91 in Maryville, TN. Born on October 31, 1933, in Fairfield, CT, she was the cherished daughter of Stephen and Anna Szekeres.

Cyndy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gennaro (Jerry) Prozzo, a fellow artist with whom she shared 48 wonderful years, and by her son Marco Prozzo, who was married to Shaun McBride. A devoted mother, wife, grandmother, and friend, Cyndy’s legacy extends far beyond her books to the countless lives she touched personally and professionally.

An accomplished creator, Cyndy authored and illustrated over 150 children’s books for publishers such as Simon and Schuster, Random House, and Golden Books. Her beloved books, including Pippa Mouse, the Toby series, Peter Rabbit (illustrator), and Suppertime for Freida Fuzzy Paws, brought her whimsical, heartfelt creations to life and captured the imaginations of countless readers. After graduating from Pratt Institute, Cyndy launched her career in Brooklyn, NY, before relocating to Putney, VT, where she continued to write and illustrate. She often said that her lively characters lived in her mind and came out through her hand onto the pages. The artistry in her illustrations reflects her vibrant personality and innate ability to find magic in everyday life.

Her work and papers have been memorialized through the UCONN Northeast Children's Literature Collection. A portion of her original works are available for collectors at R. Michelson Galleries in North Hampton, MA.

Cyndy loved hosting family and friends in her home, cooking, and gardening. She found joy in nurturing not only her creations but also her relationships, building a legacy of warmth and love. She is survived by her son, Christopher Prozzo, and his wife, Andrea, as well as her grandchildren, Nina (Danny) and Emmett (Rachel), and four great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends made over the years.

Cyndy’s life was a celebration of creativity, family, and kindness. She leaves behind a legacy of beloved stories, vivid illustrations, and a spirit of generosity that will continue to inspire generations to come.
