Is That You

Maverick Jace Bunch

I have noticed that there are two things people are curious about when a baby is born: it’s gender and which relatives he or she will favor. For instance, the first time I saw my grandson Maverick, I tried to see who he resembled. It was so amazing seeing the different people in him. That being said, the genetic combination I had imagined him having was nothing like the wonderful one the Lord chose.
Now, when I was carrying Sara, Maverick’s mother, I was especially curious to what she would look like. You see, Tim and I are a little extreme in our traits. I have a very fair complexion, blue eyes, and I started out as a blonde. My husband Tim on the other hand has Native American ancestry on both sides of his family. He has black hair and a darker skin tone. Unlike me, he never burns. So, what does Sara look like? Basically, she is a darker version of me. I have heard a few relatives say that about her. But there are a few people who still say she resembles Tim.
Recently, I had a huge confirmation on Sara favoring me. A young lady told me: “Your last name is Cox. You have to be Sara Cox’s mother.” Believe it or not, I was speechless for a few seconds. She went on to say: “I saw Sara when I saw you.” Needless to say, that made my day. It also reminded me of an insightful scene in my friend Leigh Ann Thomas’s book: “Ribbons, Lace and Moments of Grace: Inspiration for the Mother of the Bride.”
Leigh Ann and I used to attend the same Christian writer’s conference and had the same circle of friends. Not only does she have a deep love for the Lord, but she is also a lot of fun. She’s the type of person you want to be around. As for her book, it was inspired by her experience as being the mother of the bride. In one chapter, she and her daughter had to speak to one of the vendors about the wedding. This person told Leigh Ann how much she and her daughter favored. She didn’t really notice this until she saw them side by side. Leigh Ann compared this with our walk with Jesus.
“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor.” Ephesians 5:1-2 (KJV)
Every single one of us is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27-28.) But once we accept Jesus, we should walk with Him so that others will see His attributes in us.
While Sara favors me, her interests and tastes are very different from mine. I know she won’t voluntarily watch a Star Trek movie with me, she will watch a dinosaur show. That’s my girl.
