Following the plow is 2025 collectible print

The 2025 Heritage Festival Collectible Print, "Following the Plow", painted by renowned regional artist Betty Bullen.

Our memories of growing up on a farm shape our minds and our bodies to tackle life's struggles. But these farm memories also allow us moments of sheer joy. So it is with the memories that Betty Bullen recalls regarding the 2025 Heritage Festival Collectible Print, “Following the Plow”. In Betty's own words, she describes this vividly fond memory: “ I grew up in Union County and lived here all of my young life. Having been privileged to travel to many other parts of the world and experience their unique ways and culture, it has made me realize how blessed we are to live in this small dot on the globe. Yes, it’s home…..always will be. One of my most cherished childhood memories is following along behind when my Daddy was plowing, kicking through the clods, and looking for arrowheads, flint rocks, and other treasures one might find as the plow turned the ground. There seemed to be many to a small child. Whether he was preparing for next year’s crop, laying off rows, or turning new ground, I was right there following him. It was a great joy to put this memory into visual form for the Union County Heritage Festival as their theme this year is all about Plowing. I hope it brings back a precious memory for you.”
Of course, we must thank the Frank Grizzell Family for sharing the photo of Frank and his grandson, Nick, that became not only the inspiration for Betty's painting, but also for our logo and this year's theme, “Plowing the fields”. Since 2014 when Pat Blackburn brought us the photo, Frank's plowing with his chocolate brown mule has been the brand of the Union County Heritage Festival. The logo is a tribute to Frank, to farmers, and to our agricultural heritage.
On Festival Day October 4, purchase the print at Booth Spaces 64-65 in Wilson Park. After the Festival, the Winery at Seven Springs Farm and Okie's Pharmacy in Maynardville will carry the print. All proceeds go to fund prizes for the Heritage Art Show and the Festival. Betty Bullen of Betty Bullen Art can be contacted by email at bullenart@aol.com.
