Converting an Eyesore Into a Sight for Sore Eyes (and an empty stomach!)

On the bank high above Maynardville Highway, across from HMMS middle school, are 2 old sign boards in desperate need of a major overhaul, but who do they belong to? Not the Little League, they have their own cute sign shaped like a baseball. Maybe the mayor knows – nope! One sign has a faded VFW Post 3968 sticker, let’s ask them. Nope – the VFW post surrendered its charter in 2019 and signed their building over to American Legion Post 212.
So, as a service to the community, the American Legion voted to overhaul or remove said signs. Okay…trim the overgrown weeds, strip and paint the metal, fix the lights, find a power source, replace the letter racks, purchase letters – what’s the cost? $3,000! Hold on, our budget won’t support that, now what? Since we are not regularly changing the message, why not print a banner and mount it on the existing sign?
AMERICAN LEGION
FREE DINNER – 1ST MONDAY 6 PM
FREE B-FAST – 2ND SATURDAY 8 AM
(VETERANS AND GUESTS)
Add 2 solar lights and we get our message out, all for less than $400! Way better than hanging the banner between 2 T-posts.
We invite you, dear veteran, to join us at these meals. They are a great opportunity for chatting with others with whom you have something in common – serving our great country! Our hope is that this visual reminder will remind you of our meals.
Additionally, we host an Open House on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 3 to 7 PM. Occasionally, our post receives food bank items, which are available to our local veterans, so partake of the opportunity to stop by and get some free food!
